WASHINGTON, MI - Women's soccer (7-1-0, 1-0-0) got their WHAC season started on the right note with a 1-0 victory over the Cleary Cougars (2-6-0, 0-1-0) on Saturday night. With a tailgate, a large crowd, and the WHAC commissioner in attendance, Rochester made sure to keep the crowd cheering and build momentum toward key matchups coming up.
Rochester's defense was the highlight of the game, preventing Cleary from getting shot opportunities by preventing the ball from getting inside the box. Defenders Alyssa Romatz and Isabella Ames were at the forefront of the effort, trapping Cleary's forwards and forcing errant passes. Rochester also controlled much of the midfield.
Rochester shot 27 shots during the game 23 better than the Cougars. However, Cleary's goalkeeper made sure to halt several shots, giving the Warriors trouble on the offensive end. 15 minutes into the game, junior Karen Barry would get a great ball from sophomore Olivia Howes, with Barry taking advantage of open space for a goal.
Rochester and Cleary were locked into a physical battle, and the second half was indicative of that as both teams made great tackles on the ball. Midfielders Jenna Schodowski and Faith Staley would get great looks at goal, but saves would halt the efforts. Rochester made sure to maintain composure defensively, and freshman Noemie Tartrou would make a great save to ensure the 1-0 victory.
