WARRIORS DEFEATED IN NAIL-BITER AGAINST SAGINAW VALLEY STATE

FRASER, Mich. - A tightly contested three periods turned out against the favor of the Warriors (1-5-0) on Friday night against Saginaw Valley State in Big Boy Arena, 4-2. Following a dead-even first two periods, the Cardinals opened the game up with two late goals to take the lead on the Warriors. RCU's Griffin Hernalsteen led the team with two goals, while Shaun Zatelli assisted on both goals. RCU goalie Dominic Carnaghi saved 35 shots in the contest. 

THE RUNDOWN

FIRST PERIOD

  • The game's first goal came on a power play by Hernalsteen, who Zatelli and Jake Mullins set up to give the Warriors the lead. RCU's defense stayed strong throughout the first period, with Carnaghi making several saves to keep the Warriors ahead

SECOND PERIOD

  • The Cardinals answered with a power play goal of their own seven minutes into the second by forward Tyler Samson. RCU fired back just under a minute later, when Zatelli fired the puck over to Hernalsteen for his second goal of the game. RCU's lead was short-lived, as five minutes later, Saginaw Valley's Lucas Millmine scored unassisted with seven minutes remaining

THIRD PERIOD

  • The Cardinals took the lead with under nine minutes remaining in the third off a goal from Garrett Sawyer. RCU created a couple opportunities to tie the game up, but came up short as the Cardinals scored on an empty net to put the game away with 30 seconds remaining
