GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Warriors (2-23, 0-12) fell short of wins against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles (17-15, 5-5) on Monday, April 8. Defensively, the Warriors performed soundly, while sophomore Jaya Forti produced a strong day at-bat with four hits across the games.
GAME ONE - L, 1-5
After a tight first two innings defensively, the Golden Eagles captured the lead with four runs in the third inning. Forti placed the Warriors in scoring position with a double in the following inning, but the Golden Eagles cleaned things up on the next two at-bats. The Warriors were kept quiet offensively for much of the game but held the hosts to the same standard for most of the middle innings.
The Golden Eagles added another run in the sixth inning, but the Warriors halted the team from Grand Rapids with a big strikeout from junior Rachael Winkel. Forti singled to start the seventh inning, setting up Madelyn Latham for an RBI single. However, the Warriors were left with one run after Cornerstone ended the game on a groundout.
GAME TWO - L, 3-5
RCU got off to a great start in the first inning, hitting three consecutive singles before taking advantage of a Golden Eagle error for a score. Emma Cronkright helped the Warriors out with a sacrifice bunt to earn Forti a run before the inning's conclusion. The second inning featured a Warrior double-play from Jayde Dominey-McClean, who snagged a lineout before tagging a Cornerstone baserunner.
The Golden Eagles recovered in the fourth inning with a home run to steal the lead 3-2. Senior Alicia McConnell lined up in the sixth inning to hit a huge home run into left field to tie the game. The hosts responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, ending the Warriors' hopes in the seventh on the ground.
